Fall bat migration has begun in Ukraine: how to keep them out of your home

The fall migration of bats has begun in Ukraine. In August, migratory bat species begin moving south in search of wintering grounds. The active migration period will last until mid-September.

During this period, bats also enter their swarming and mating season. Among the species migrating through Ukraine are the red-eared bat and the forest bat.

During their flights, bats may accidentally enter residential buildings through open windows, transom windows, or balconies. Once inside, the animals are not always able to find their way out on their own.

“In search of a safe place to rest during the day, they may accidentally fly into open windows, balconies, or transom windows. Unfortunately, not all of them manage to find their way out on their own,” noted Bats Ukraine.

If a bat remains indoors without access to water and food, it can quickly become weak. In addition, the animal’s social calls can attract other bats. As a result, dozens or even hundreds of bats can sometimes end up in a single home.

How to Protect Your Home from Bats

Experts recommend following a few simple rules:

  • close windows and vents if you’re leaving your home overnight or for several days;
  • install window screens;
  • do not leave balconies and windows open and unprotected during the active migration period.

If a single bat has already flown into your home, in most cases you can safely release it on your own by following the experts’ recommendations.

However, if there are many bats inside, it is not recommended to try to catch them on your own. In such a situation, it is best to seek help from specialists.
