Ukraine has introduced its first national standard for accessibility terminology
Ukraine has approved, for the first time, the national standard “Terminology of Accessibility,” which defines the correct terminology for use in official communications. First Lady Olena Zelenska announced this during the third national forum, “My Accessibility – 2026.”
“This year, I hope we will be able to make accessible language the norm. The national standard ‘Terminology of Accessibility’ has been adopted for the first time. It establishes the vocabulary that is not only recommended but required for use in official communications,” Zelenska noted.
The forum also featured a separate discussion on “Language of Dignity”—a lesson on respectful communication held in Ukrainian schools on September 1. According to the First Lady, its goal is to foster a culture of mutual respect starting in childhood.
“Some might ask: What difference does it make whether we say ‘disabled person’ or ‘person with a disability’? My answer is: something important—the person will finally come first. Both in our speech and in our actions,” she said.
During the event, projects were also presented on creating inclusive educational standards and developing policies for veterans. Currently, various ministries are implementing nearly 30 projects in the field of accessibility.
In communities, in particular, accessible driving schools and administrative service centers are being developed, adaptive sports are being promoted, and positions for accessibility officers are being established. More than 350 representatives from the government, local communities, the business sector, the veteran community, and international experts participated in the forum.
