The war in Ukraine has caused environmental damage worth 6.4 trillion hryvnias
Russia’s war against Ukraine has caused environmental damage totaling nearly 6.4 trillion hryvnias. The most affected are soils, air, and protected natural areas, and cases of pollution are being recorded in tens of thousands, according to the Ministry of Economy.
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the State Environmental Inspectorate has documented 10,885 cases of environmental damage. In particular:
Soil contamination and land littering caused by missile and bomb strikes are estimated at 1.34 trillion hryvnias.
Damage from air pollution caused by combustion products amounts to 1.15 trillion hryvnias.
Pollution and illegal use of water resources have caused losses of 120 billion hryvnias.
The greatest losses occurred in natural protected areas, totaling 3.8 trillion hryvnias.

“The overwhelming majority of cases are being investigated within pre-trial criminal proceedings under Article 441 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, ‘Ecocide,’” the Ministry of Economy reports. “Materials regarding the damage are also being attached to other ongoing law enforcement cases.”
Thus, the war not only destroys cities and infrastructure, but also causes colossal damage to nature, which will require decades to recover.
