A powerful magnetic storm has hit the Earth

A powerful magnetic storm has hit the Earth

A powerful G2-level magnetic storm is currently affecting Earth, caused by a coronal mass ejection from the Sun. Scientists warn that geomagnetic disturbances may persist for several more days. During this period, people sensitive to weather changes may experience a decline in their well-being, according to the British Geological Survey Geomagnetism.

According to scientists at the British Geological Survey Geomagnetism, a STORM G2-level magnetic storm is affecting Earth on May 19 and 20. The cause was another coronal mass ejection from the Sun.

Experts explain that when a powerful stream of charged particles reaches Earth, it begins to affect the planet’s magnetic field. This is precisely what causes magnetic storms. According to preliminary forecasts, the intensity of the disturbances may decrease slightly to G1 level in the coming days, but geomagnetic activity will still remain elevated.

Scientists also do not rule out a new coronal mass ejection. If it reaches Earth, the magnetic storm could continue on May 21–22. The Space Weather Prediction Center noted that one of the solar eruptions occurred as early as May 16. According to scientists’ calculations, it was this event that triggered the current wave of geomagnetic disturbances.

What do levels G1 and G2 mean? This is a scale of magnetic storm intensity ranging from 1 to 5. The higher the level, the stronger the impact on Earth’s magnetic field, the operation of equipment, and people’s well-being.

During G2-level storms, some people may complain of headaches, weakness, drowsiness, mood swings, or sleep problems. This is especially true for people sensitive to weather changes, the elderly, and those with heart or blood pressure issues. Doctors advise paying closer attention to your body on such days and not overexerting yourself. Experts recommend:

  • sleep at least 7–8 hours;
  • drink more clean water;
  • avoid alcohol and heavy meals;
  • get more rest;
  • avoid physical and emotional exhaustion.

Scientists also remind us that solar activity is constantly changing. Therefore, forecasts may be updated even several times a day. “The sun is currently in a phase of high activity, so new geomagnetic storms may occur quite frequently,” researchers warn.

On Wednesday, Ukraine is expected to experience unstable summer-like weather with precipitation of varying intensity across nearly the entire country.

On May 19, cloudy weather with some sunny intervals is expected in Kyiv and the Kyiv region, with brief showers and thunderstorms in some areas.

On Monday, May 19, cloudy weather with some sunny intervals is forecast for Ukraine; rain and hail are possible in several regions.
