A resident of the Rivne region was sentenced to 13 years for the murder of an acquaintance
A resident of the Rivne region will spend 13 years behind bars for the intentional murder of an acquaintance, whom he shot with an automatic rifle while under the influence of alcohol, police reported. The court also ordered the defendant to pay 3 million hryvnias in compensation for emotional distress to the victim’s family.
As a reminder, on June 30, 2024, near the village of Vovchytsi, a then 54-year-old resident of Zarichne—who was a member of the Zarichne Territorial Community Volunteer Unit and was under the influence of alcohol— fired two shots from an AK-74 assault rifle at a 35-year-old resident of the village of Sernyky. One of the bullets struck the man in the abdomen.
After the incident, the perpetrator fled in a car. The victim died in the hospital from his injuries.
The suspect hid in the forest for four days. By order of the chief of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Rivne Oblast, a special police operation was launched. The assailant was placed on the national wanted list and was apprehended at midnight on July 5 in the village of Zelena Dibrova, Varash District.

In connection with the intentional homicide, investigators, under the procedural guidance of the prosecutor’s office, notified the resident of Zarichne that he was suspected of committing a criminal offense under Part 1 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The court ordered him to be held in pretrial detention, where he remains to this day. The pretrial investigation has been completed: the case file has been forwarded to the court.

Aggravating circumstances include the commission of the criminal offense while under the influence of alcohol. No mitigating circumstances have been established.
Recently, a panel of judges at the Rivne City Court sentenced a 56-year-old resident of the village of Zarichne to 13 years in prison. The verdict has not yet become final and may be appealed within 30 days, according to the Rivne Regional Police.
