The warhead of a Russian drone carrying 50 kg of explosives crashed into an apartment in Odessa

In Odesa, police bomb disposal experts defused the explosive component of a Russian drone that had landed inside an apartment in a high-rise building following a nighttime attack. Inside the residential building on the 11th floor, experts discovered a dangerous, unexploded charge containing approximately 50 kilograms of explosive material. The situation was critical, as the munition remained armed with a detonator and could have exploded at any moment.

In Odesa, following a nighttime attack by Russian drones, one of the “Geran-2” drones struck a high-rise residential building in the Primorsky district. As a result of the strike, part of the building’s structure was destroyed, and inside one of the apartments on the 11th floor, debris and the drone’s warhead—which had not exploded—remained.

Bomb disposal experts from the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Odesa region quickly arrived at the scene. During their inspection of the premises, they discovered not only fragments of the drone but also a fully intact, undetonated warhead equipped with a detonator. “An undetonated warhead containing 50 kg of explosive material was discovered in an apartment on the 11th floor of an 18-story residential building,” the National Police reported.

According to law enforcement officials, the drone’s warhead was in an extremely unstable condition, as it had sustained mechanical damage from the impact and remained equipped with a detonator. This meant that any careless movement or vibration could have caused it to detonate.

Explosive ordnance disposal specialists carried out a complex operation to defuse and remove the explosive materials directly inside the residential building. The work was carried out under high-risk conditions, given the possibility of an instantaneous explosion, which could have led to massive destruction in the high-rise building. After stabilizing the situation, the bomb disposal experts carefully removed the drone’s warhead along with the remains of the electronic components and the motor. All hazardous materials were prepared for further transport.

Police reported that the seized explosive components will be destroyed at a special testing range where controlled detonations are conducted. This is a standard procedure that allows for the complete elimination of the threat to the civilian population. The nighttime drone attack on Odesa once again demonstrated how dangerous debris can be, even after targets are hit by air defense systems or during the crash of unmanned aerial vehicles. In this case, the warhead landed in a residential building, creating a direct threat to residents.

Law enforcement and rescue services continue to survey the affected areas to rule out the presence of other dangerous objects and ensure the safety of residents in high-rise buildings.
