83 shrapnel fragments were removed from his body: Natalka Karpa’s husband recalled his injury

August 27 holds special significance for soldier Yevgeny Terekhov. On this day in 2014, he suffered a severe shrapnel wound in the war, and two years later, on August 27, 2016, he married singer Natalka Karpa.

Yevhen Terekhov, husband of Ukrainian singer Natalka Karpa, has been defending Ukraine for over ten years. On the anniversary of his injury, he recalled the events of 2014 and explained why he calls this date his second birthday.

According to the soldier, he suffered a severe shrapnel wound that day. Doctors managed to remove 83 pieces of shrapnel from his body, but 27 still remain inside him. “That day, I was seriously wounded while defending Ukraine. They removed 83 pieces of shrapnel from my body. Twenty-seven remain inside me to this day. For some, it’s just a date. For me, it’s my second birthday,” Terekhov said.

He noted that after that day, his life was effectively divided into two parts—before the injury and after it. At the same time, August 27 became for him not just a date associated with the war and the pain he endured.

It was on this very day in 2016 that Yevhen Terekhov and Natalka Karpa decided to get married. So, for the family, this single date now combines two important events—the day the soldier suffered a serious injury and the birthday of their family. “But there’s another story behind this day. It was on August 27, 2016, that we decided to get married. And today marks 10 years since we became husband and wife. It’s amazing how a single date can encompass so much: pain and love, fear and faith, struggle and life,” the soldier wrote.

Terekhov also thanked his wife for their years together and her support. The couple has a daughter, Zlata. Despite his injuries, Yevhen Terekhov continues to serve and defend Ukraine. He noted that for him, this is another way to make August 27 a brighter day. “I’m still defending Ukraine. Perhaps this is how I try to make this day a little brighter every year. August 27 is my second birthday and our family’s birthday,” he said.

The soldier also addressed his wife, thanking her for being by his side during the hardest moments and for staying by his side now. “Thank you for these 10 years. For being there when things were at their hardest, and for staying by my side today. Ten years together. And we still have a long life ahead of us,” Terekhov wrote. He shared this in an Instagram post.
