A DNR militant has been charged with holding civilians captive at a high school in the Kherson region
A member of the illegal armed group known as the “DNR” has been notified that he is suspected of mistreating civilians. According to the prosecutor’s office, the case involves holding people in inhumane conditions at a seized high school in the Kherson region.
According to the investigation, from April to October 2022, he, along with other Russian military personnel, carried out combat missions in the Kherson region, checked the documents of Ukrainian citizens at unauthorized checkpoints, and was also involved in the unlawful detention of at least 9 civilians from the Beryslav District.
People were detained following searches and inspections of their cell phones, after which they were taken to premises seized by the occupiers, specifically a local high school building, which was used as a place of unlawful detention.
According to the investigation, the suspect kept civilians there in inhumane conditions: without adequate lighting, furniture, or places to sleep, as well as without access to hygiene supplies or the ability to freely use the restroom. Food and water were provided in limited quantities and at significant intervals.
According to the victims’ testimony, during their unlawful detention, they were also interrogated, beaten, and subjected to torture.
These actions were part of a pattern by the occupying forces aimed at intimidating the civilian population, obtaining information about pro-Ukrainian residents, and suppressing resistance to the occupation.
On April 12, 2023, Ukrainian military personnel took him prisoner in the village of Krasnohorivka, Pokrovsk District, Donetsk Oblast.
The pretrial investigation is being conducted by investigators from the Main Directorate of the National Police in Kherson Oblast.
