Two occupiers held a civilian captive in a cellar for 36 days: charges have been filed against them

In the Kharkiv region, a court will hear the case of two Russian servicemen accused of mistreating civilians and violating the laws and customs of war.

According to the investigation, in late March 2026, soldiers from the Russian Federation’s 128th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade entered the village of Vovchanski Khutory in the Chuhuiv District. In early April, they detained a 60-year-old local resident who had come to look for food for his seriously ill mother.

The occupiers threatened to shoot the man if he tried to escape, then forcibly confined him to a cellar. The cellar had no electricity, heating, or adequate sanitary conditions. The captive was given food no more than once a day, and sometimes not at all.

The man spent 36 days in these conditions. During that time, his elderly mother, who had been left alone at home, died.

On May 11, Ukrainian military personnel captured both Russians. The pretrial investigation has now been completed, and the indictment has been submitted to the court. The Russian servicemen are currently held as prisoners of war.
