The Russian Kalashnikov Group announced the shipment of a large batch of 7.62-mm SVDs sniper rifles with folding stocks. The weapons are being delivered as part of government contracts for 2026.
Kalashnikov did not disclose the specific volume of the new shipment.
At the same time, the company stated that, based on last year’s results, it increased production of 7.62-mm Dragunov sniper rifles with folding stocks by a factor of 13 compared to 2024.
The Russian company emphasizes that the SVDS allegedly remains relevant on the front lines of the Russia-Ukraine war and is in high demand. Among its advantages, the manufacturer cites compactness, relatively light weight, and reliability.
The SVD-S is a modification of the Dragunov sniper rifle (SVD), which was developed primarily for airborne troops, marines, and special operations units.
The basic SVD was adopted by the Soviet Army in 1963.
Compared to the base version, the SVDS underwent a number of design changes. In particular, the wooden parts were replaced with polymer ones, and the stock was made folding and frame-type.
The rifle also features a swivel cheek rest, designed to facilitate the use of optical sights while firing.
The SVDS is equipped with open-sight mechanical aiming devices and uses various types of 7.62-mm rifle cartridges. According to the specified characteristics, sniper ammunition provides the best group accuracy.
The Russian side claims that the SVD-S can be used against personnel and unarmored targets at ranges of up to 1,300 meters.
Russia has repeatedly stated the need to replace the SVD and its variants with more modern models.
The reasons cited include the design’s obsolescence and technical limitations, particularly its limited accuracy, which is critical in modern combat conditions.
One of the main candidates for replacement was the SVCh—the Chukavin sniper rifle.
According to available data, Kalashnikov is supplying the SVC in limited batches, specifically to airborne and special operations units.
At the same time, the increase in SVDS production indicates that the Russian army continues to actively use this platform—which was proven effective back in Soviet times—despite statements about the need to replace it.
The company reported this on its Telegram channel.
As a reminder, fighters from the 237th Unmanned Systems Battalion of the 7th Airborne Corps struck two Russian “Grad” rocket launchers. The enemy equipment was destroyed on the Hulyaypole–Pology highway, complicating logistics for Russian troops.
Soldiers of the 33rd Separate Mechanized Brigade destroyed a Russian TOS-1A “Solntsepok” heavy flamethrower system. The Ukrainian Ground Forces described this equipment as a rare target and released a video of its destruction. According to the military, after the strike, the Russian system was left as nothing more than a pile of charred metal.
