Katarina Maternová, the European Union’s Ambassador to Ukraine, shared an emotional post following yet another massive Russian attack, which she had to endure while taking shelter. She noted that she spent most of that time in a shelter, where she is still feeling the effects of the stress she experienced.
“Last night was horrific. In the photo, I’m sitting in a shelter where I spent most of the night. My hands are still shaking. The city smells of smoke from fires that broke out in several parts of the city,” Maternová wrote.
She also reported that during the massive strike, Russia launched dozens of missiles and hundreds of drones, and the attack affected several major cities in Ukraine.
According to her, there are casualties and injuries as a result of the shelling.
“The Russians killed at least 14 people. Over 90 were injured,” the diplomat noted.
She provided data on the consequences in various cities: “Five people were killed in Kyiv, including a 12-year-old boy. In Odesa, the attack claimed seven lives. In Dnipro, two people were killed and 27 were injured.”
Maternova emphasized that the strike targeted civilian facilities in residential areas.
“This was not an operation. It was an attack on innocent people in their sleep,” she emphasized.
The diplomat also emotionally described her feelings after the shelling and life under constant attack.
“It feels like the explosions will never end,” she added.
At the same time, Maternova emphasized that Ukrainian cities continue to function despite the war: “I always pause to think about how Ukraine gets back on its feet every morning. How cities begin to pulsate with life… This has been going on for over four years.”
As a reminder, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga appealed to the international community not to grow accustomed to the daily civilian casualties in Ukraine caused by Russian strikes and to increase pressure on Moscow.
Russian troops carried out an atypical massive attack that lasted for a full day and was marked by shifting strike times and the unprecedented use of ballistic weapons.
