The artistic community of Chernihiv Oblast has suffered an irreparable loss—Dmytro Hladirenko, an orchestra musician and virtuoso saxophonist, was killed while carrying out a combat mission on the front lines.

The Chernihiv City Palace of Culture officially announced the death of the defender, who traded his musical instrument for a weapon.

The tragedy occurred on March 12 while defending Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Dmytro was an integral part of the city’s cultural life, bringing joy to the residents of Chernihiv through his artistry for many years.

Colleagues remember the musician as an exceptionally sincere and bright person whose dedication to his craft inspired those around him.

Even while serving in the Armed Forces, the artist never gave up on his dream of returning to his normal life and the stage after victory.

“On March 12, while carrying out a combat mission, our colleague—orchestra artist and saxophonist Dmytro Hladirenko—was killed. He was not only a talented musician but also a sincere, cheerful person, devoted to his craft and to Ukraine,” the institution’s statement reads.

A particularly poignant memory for the ensemble was Dmytro’s visit during his last leave after being wounded.

Despite what he had endured on the front lines, he found the strength to visit his home Palace of Culture to once again experience the magic of live music.

“Even during his leave after being wounded, he couldn’t resist—he came to the orchestra hall and played. That day, his music once again filled the hall with life, warmth, and hope… The staff of the institution extends their sincere condolences to his family, loved ones, and everyone who knew Dmytro,” the Palace of Culture noted.

The musician dreamed of picking up his saxophone again in peacetime to play the Victory March for the audience.

As a reminder, Yaroslav Chernyshev, founder of the North Side Group, was killed on the front lines.

Roman Tkachuk, head of the Institute of Civil Society, also died in the war.
