Two scientists were killed during the strike on the NASU building, according to the language ombudsman

So far, two scientists are known to have been killed as a result of the Russian attack on the building of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, where two floors were destroyed. There are injured, and several people remain unaccounted for. This was reported by Olena Ivanovska, the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language.

During the fire, people were forced to flee by climbing out of the windows of the burning building. The agency emphasized that this strike is yet another confirmation that the aggression is directed not only against cities and civilians, but also against Ukrainian science, education, and culture, which form the nation’s collective memory and the intellectual foundation of the state.

It also noted that for centuries, Russia has sought to destroy Ukrainian scientists, erase the Ukrainian language from science, and deny Ukraine’s distinct identity, and today it continues to do so with missiles and drones. At the same time, the agency emphasized that destroyed buildings can be rebuilt, whereas Ukraine’s intellectual and scientific tradition cannot be destroyed.
