Following a drone attack, fuel tanks were on fire at the Gorky station in Moscow
A massive fire broke out in Russia following a drone attack on the Gorky oil pumping station. Satellite images showed that at least two tanks were on fire. The facility is crucial for the transportation of Russian oil. This is evidenced by a Planet Labs satellite image from April 23, which was shared by "Schemes."
In the Nizhny Novgorod region, the aftermath of the strike on the Gorky oil pumping station was documented. The fire that broke out after the drone attack engulfed at least two oil tanks. A satellite image from Planet Labs dated April 23 was released by journalists from the Schemes project. It shows signs of a major fire on the station’s grounds.
According to sources, the facility was attacked the day before by drones linked to the Security Service of Ukraine. The strike damaged three oil tanks. The fire covered an area of about 20,000 square meters. Reuters also reported that at least two of the four tanks caught fire. Each of them can hold up to 50,000 cubic meters of oil.
The Gorky station is part of Russia’s extensive oil transportation infrastructure. It is owned by Transneft-Upper Volga and facilitates the transfer of crude oil to refineries. In particular, oil is supplied through this station to facilities in Moscow, Yaroslavl, and Kirishi.
Additionally, this facility is connected to the Druzhba pipeline. Oil is transported through it to European countries, specifically Slovakia and Hungary. “The fire engulfed a significant portion of the station’s territory,” reports state.
Experts point out that such facilities are critical to the operation of the oil industry. Damage to them can disrupt logistics and the supply of raw materials.
Ultimately, the attack has once again demonstrated that strikes on energy infrastructure can have not only local but also broader consequences for the entire oil transportation system.
The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation has leveled new accusations against Ukraine, claiming that a drone attack targeted a tanker located in the territorial waters of the aggressor country.
In France, a tanker from Russia’s “shadow fleet” was released after paying a fine.
Russia is using its navy to protect tankers subject to sanctions.
