Turkey has called on Russia and Ukraine to take measures to ensure the safety of civilian shipping in the Black Sea following a drone attack on a vessel near the Russian port of Novorossiysk on August 3.
According to the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a ship flying the Turkish flag was damaged in the incident, and three crew members sustained serious injuries. Ankara stated that it is “seriously concerned about attacks on civilian vessels in the Black Sea” and continues to monitor the condition of its citizens.
According to Turkey’s General Directorate of Maritime Affairs, there were 22 crew members on board the vessel, including 13 Turkish citizens. All sailors were evacuated; three of them, according to preliminary reports, sustained serious injuries.
A preliminary assessment indicated that the ship’s living quarters and bow sustained damage. A fire also broke out on board.
Turkish authorities have not identified who was responsible for the attack. The country’s Foreign Ministry emphasized that it is closely monitoring the situation and called on all parties to ensure the safety of maritime transport.
