The presidents of Poland and Romania have commented on Putin's statement regarding his readiness for peace

The presidents of Poland and Romania, Karol Nawrocki and Nicușor Dan, expressed deep skepticism regarding Vladimir Putin’s recent statements about the Russian Federation’s alleged readiness for peace talks.

During a joint press conference in Bucharest, the leaders of both countries emphasized that the aggressor’s actual actions completely contradict its public rhetoric, according to Ukrinform.

Karol Nawrocki emphasized that in recent months, Russia has lost more territory on the battlefield than it has been able to capture, which indicates the depletion of its military capabilities.

In addition to military setbacks, statistical data point to a noticeable decline in the Russian economy, making a suspension of the conflict advantageous for Moscow.

“From this perspective, we see that peace, as I understand it, is also beginning to be in the interests of the Russian Federation,” the Polish president noted.

He added that European leaders seek a just peace but clearly distinguish between the aggressor and the victim in this unjust war.

At the same time, Nawrocki urged the international community not to trust the words of the Russian leadership, as they often serve merely as a smokescreen for regrouping forces.

“Vladimir Putin’s words should be treated with deep skepticism, and I believe that a potential peace in Ukraine lies in the hands of other negotiators,” the Polish leader emphasized.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan supported his colleague, noting that the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the front lines are currently much stronger than they were last year.

He noted that despite declarations of a desire to cease fire, Russia continues to conduct intense combat operations and refine its military strategies.

According to Dan, none of the Kremlin’s actions demonstrate a genuine desire for stability on the European continent, forcing neighboring countries to strengthen their defense capabilities.

“I could also add to this the hybrid war that each of us is experiencing. We see that this is continuing, and we observe no signs of any desire for peace,” he concluded.

Putin spoke of “ending the war” due to serious problems on the home front and at the front

On Saturday, May 9, a Victory Day parade did take place in Moscow—albeit in a scaled-down version. Nothing particularly interesting happened: since a ceasefire was in effect during those days, there were no provocations, which the Kremlin had so feared. However, one of Putin’s statements still sparked a storm of reactions in the information space: the Russian dictator declared that “the conflict with Ukraine is nearing its end.”

Ukraine is ready for dialogue with Russia provided Moscow is genuinely committed to serious talks, but such meetings require careful preparation. Any direct contacts between the leaders of the warring states do not occur spontaneously or via a regular phone call.
