Russia attacked a civilian vessel: five crew members were killed

Russian forces launched a missile strike on a civilian vessel flying the flag of Guinea-Bissau. As a result of the attack, five crew members were killed, eight others were evacuated, and the fate of five remains unknown.

“Russian invaders launched three X-59/X-69 cruise missiles at the civilian dry cargo ship Golden Leo (flagged in Guinea-Bissau, owned by Turkey), which was leaving the combat zone with a cargo of grain at the time of the attack. The missiles struck the area of the starboard side of the superstructure, causing a fire on board. Five people were killed as a result of the strike. The fate of five other crew members remains unknown; the search is ongoing. The vessel’s technical condition is being assessed,” the statement reads.

Units of the Ukrainian Navy and the Maritime Search and Rescue Service were deployed to provide assistance.

As of 8:30 p.m., eight crew members had been evacuated to a hospital in Odesa.

“This is yet another deliberate attack by Russia on an unarmed civilian vessel flying a foreign flag, which posed no military threat whatsoever. The attack is an act of terrorism against peaceful navigation and a gross violation of international humanitarian law,” the Navy stated.
