Russia is significantly expanding a plant in Tatarstan to ramp up production of shahids
The Russian Federation is carrying out a large-scale construction project to build new production facilities within the “Alabuga” Special Economic Zone (near the city of Elabuga in Tatarstan), where the main assembly plant for Shahed-type attack drones is located. This was reported by “Strategic Aviation,” citing an analysis of recent satellite imagery.
Construction work intensified in late spring in the southern part of the economic zone. The area of this new construction site is vast, covering hundreds of hectares, where the Russians plan to build at least one more large production facility consisting of four separate buildings. In addition, at the end of June, expansion of the industrial complex began in the western part of Yelabuga, where foundations were laid for two more production facilities.

Satellite data indicates that the facility has been expanding rapidly over the past eight months. During this time, dozens of new dormitories for staff housing and two large buildings for the logistical storage of components were built on the complex’s grounds, and at least one new large assembly hall was put into operation. Experts note that such a large number of dispersed production sites makes the enterprise more resilient to potential attacks, since the destruction of a single building would not halt the overall production process for drones.

Russia plans to bring in 12,000 North Korean workers to the “Alabuga” Special Economic Zone in Tatarstan by the end of 2025 to address labor shortages at enterprises involved in the production of attack drones.
