Russians face the threat of sulfuric acid rain due to a fire in Tuapse

The fire at the oil terminal in the port of Tuapse, now in its third day, threatens to cause an environmental disaster and lead to the release of nitrogen and sulfur oxides in the form of acid rain.

Smog from the burning facility has already reached Sochi and Stavropol, according to environmentalist Georgy Kavanoyan on his Telegram channel. Combustion products in the atmosphere turn into nitric and sulfuric acids, posing a serious threat to the health of residents in the regions covered by the smoke screen.

Experts note that some of the harmful emissions do not burn completely and fall to the ground in the form of an oily film and black balls resembling oil spills. Residents of Tuapse and nearby villages have already observed phenomena they call “oil rain.” City streets are covered with a distinctive coating, indicating a high concentration of toxic substances in the air.

The situation is worsening due to the duration of the fire and the large volume of petroleum product emissions into the environment. Currently, the smog continues to spread along the coast, affecting more and more settlements. Environmentalists warn of the cumulative effect of pollution on the Black Sea ecosystem and coastal areas. The presence of oxides in the clouds, when interacting with water vapor, will inevitably lead to chemical precipitation over a significant area.

Thus, the incident at the port is turning into a large-scale environmental disaster for the entire southern region of the Russian Federation. Local residents are urged to minimize time spent outdoors while the smog persists. The final consequences for the coast’s flora and fauna can only be assessed after the fire is fully extinguished and appropriate soil and water analyses are conducted. Currently, smoke levels remain high, and the weather forecast calls for precipitation, which only increases the risk of acid rain. Experts continue to monitor the movement of air masses carrying combustion products from petroleum products.

As a reminder, a massive fire continues at an oil terminal in the Russian city of Tuapse, which broke out following a strike by Ukrainian drones on April 16. Efforts to fully extinguish the fire have failed for several days in a row.

Residents of Tuapse, Russia, are increasingly complaining about the unbearable living conditions in the frontline city. The once-popular resort has turned into an area of environmental disaster and constant danger due to regular explosions at local industrial facilities.

On the night of April 20, Ukrainian defense forces successfully attacked a number of strategic targets, including an oil refinery in Tuapse and two large amphibious assault ships in occupied Sevastopol
