Russian strike on Dnipro destroys UN warehouse containing $1 million in humanitarian aid – Reuters
As a result of a Russian missile striking a logistics facility in Dnipro, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) lost a shipment of humanitarian aid worth over $1 million.
UNHCR representative in Ukraine Bernadette Castel-Hollingworth told Reuters about this.
The enemy shelling occurred on Wednesday, May 20. A Russian missile struck a warehouse leased by the international organization, completely destroying approximately 900 pallets of essential supplies. The warehouse stored materials for the emergency setup of temporary shelters, including sleeping mats and hygiene kits. This cargo was scheduled to be distributed in the near future to internally displaced persons and residents of affected frontline areas in Ukraine. As a result of the attack on the facility, two people were killed, and several others were injured.
According to Bernadette Castel-Hollingworth, this is the first documented case since the start of the full-scale war in which an official UNHCR warehouse facility has been directly targeted or destroyed. The organization emphasizes that this incident is part of a dangerous and systematic trend of attacks on humanitarian missions. In particular, just last week, Russian drones attacked two other UN convoys—in the Dnipropetrovsk and Kherson regions.
Representatives of the international organization reiterated that regular attacks on humanitarian workers while they are performing their professional duties constitute a gross violation of international law, as civilians and relief missions must never be targeted by military strikes. According to the UNHCR, the need for assistance remains critical: since the beginning of 2026 alone, nearly 47,000 evacuated civilians have passed through the agency’s transit centers, a significant portion of whom are elderly people with limited mobility and individuals with disabilities. At the same time, the overall threat level for civilians is rising: according to the UN Monitoring Mission, in the first four months of this year, the number of civilian casualties in Ukraine increased by 21 percent compared to the same period last year.
