Rubio called for “new ideas” to end the war in Ukraine

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that achieving peace in the Russia-Ukraine war requires “new ideas” that will help break the deadlock in the negotiations.

According to Ukrainska Pravda, citing The Guardian, Rubio noted that the proposals put forward earlier were “unacceptable to Ukraine at the time.” “I don’t think they would be acceptable to Ukraine now either; in fact, they would likely be even less acceptable,” the U.S. Secretary of State said.

In his view, peace can be achieved through “some new ideas and new concepts.” Rubio added that the United States is ready to propose such ideas “in the appropriate context and form” if the opportunity and favorable conditions arise.

That same day, Rubio reported that he had discussed the need to end the war against Ukraine with Sergey Lavrov, the foreign minister of the Russian Federation—the aggressor state—during a meeting in the Philippines. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Lavrov informed the U.S. Secretary of State about the allegedly “real” state of affairs in the war and emphasized the “unacceptability of further arms deliveries” to Ukraine.
