The SBU detained a Russian informant who was monitoring military personnel in Kharkiv
The Security Service of Ukraine detained a man in Kharkiv who is suspected of passing information about Ukrainian military personnel to Russian intelligence agencies. The enemy could have used the information gathered to plan missile and bombing strikes.
According to the investigation, the informant walked around the city, photographed the locations of Ukrainian Defense Forces units, and passed their coordinates on to the Russians. He was particularly interested in the Ukrainian military’s backup command posts and shelters.
What is known about the traitor?
As the investigation revealed, the attacks were coordinated by an unemployed Kharkiv resident who came to the attention of Russian intelligence officers through Telegram channels advertising “quick” money-making opportunities.
According to the case file, the suspect walked around the regional capital to identify, photograph with his phone, and transmit to the enemy the coordinates of Defense Forces bases.
“It has been established that the perpetrator’s priority ‘targets’ were backup command posts and shelters for Ukrainian troops in Kharkiv,” the SBU explained.
SBU cyber experts and investigators documented how the informant was spying near the temporary locations of Ukrainian Armed Forces units participating in frontline combat.
Arrest and Charges
After documenting the spotter’s subversive activities, Security Service officers detained him at his place of residence.
During a search of his residence, a smartphone containing evidence of his work for the enemy was discovered.
Currently, SBU investigators have informed the detainee that he is suspected of violating Part 2 of Article 114-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (unauthorized dissemination of information regarding the movement or deployment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine or other military formations established in accordance with the laws of Ukraine, committed under martial law).
The suspect is in custody. He faces up to 8 years in prison. The investigation is ongoing to establish all the circumstances of the crime and to determine whether the suspect’s illegal actions may be classified under additional charges.
