Occupiers on the Kinburn Spit are disguising themselves as civilians
Russian troops on the temporarily occupied Kinburn Spit are wearing civilian clothing to conceal their presence and avoid strikes by the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
The occupiers are also setting up positions in civilian homes. As a result, Ukrainian troops are forced to carefully verify targets before launching strikes.
According to military officials, the occupiers are also using civilian homes and already destroyed buildings as cover. Detecting Russian infantry on the peninsula is difficult precisely because of their camouflage and the presence of civilians there.
“They’re camouflaged and wearing civilian clothes. There are civilians in the villages here. That’s the problem—we can’t just bomb every building in a row,” said a soldier with the call sign “Major.” For this reason, Ukrainian forces conduct additional reconnaissance before striking buildings. They determine whether Russian soldiers are present in a specific building and check to ensure there are no civilians nearby.
According to the soldiers, there are about 2,500 Russian troops on the Kinburn Peninsula. At the same time, the Defense Forces have managed to push back the occupiers and cut off part of their supply lines. Ukrainian military officials state that the supply of ammunition, fuel, and food to Russian units has been significantly hampered.
The commander of a Ukrainian Armed Forces reconnaissance unit, with the call sign “Java,” stated that the Russians have withdrawn beyond Heroiske. According to him, due to logistical problems, it is becoming increasingly difficult for the occupiers to resupply the units remaining deep within the Kinburn Spit.
Ukrainian military officials also reported the destruction of Russian artillery on the peninsula. Currently, they said, Russian troops can shell coastal areas of the Mykolaiv region primarily with long-range artillery from the occupied part of the Kherson region.
According to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Russian forces are primarily concentrated in the forests and in the settlements of Pokrovske, Vasylivka, Pokrovka, and Heroiske. Ukrainian reconnaissance units are using drones to detect enemy equipment, shelters, and movement routes. At the same time, the situation is complicated by the fact that civilians remain on the Kinburn Peninsula. That is why the Ukrainian military emphasizes the need for thorough reconnaissance before striking targets.
According to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, the distance from Ochakiv to the Kinburn Spit is about 5 km. Russian troops regularly attack Ochakiv and other settlements in the area. Ukrainian forces continue to target Russian logistics, warehouses, shelters, and the occupiers’ bases.
