Trump Calls Ending the War in Ukraine the Key Condition for Russia to Be Considered ‘Useful’
U.S. President Donald Trump held a phone call with Vladimir Putin, during which they discussed the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East.
The American leader emphasised the necessity of ending Russian aggression as a central factor for international stability.
Speaking to the press, Trump described the March 9 conversation as “very good,” noting that a significant number of officials from both sides were involved in the discussion.
The prolonged war in Ukraine was the central topic of the conversation. Trump remarked that the conflict has turned into an exhausting standoff with no clear diplomatic solution in sight due to the positions of the national leaders.
“We talked about Ukraine — it’s just an endless struggle… there is tremendous hatred between President Putin and President Zelensky. It seems they cannot reach an agreement,” the U.S. president said during a White House broadcast.
In addition to Ukraine, the parties discussed instability in the Middle East. Trump noted that the Russian leader expressed a desire to play a constructive role in resolving the crisis.
At the same time, Trump directly told Putin that ending hostilities in Europe must be a priority. He stressed that the real usefulness of Kremlin efforts on the international stage depends on a ceasefire in Ukraine.
“We, of course, talked about the Middle East. And he wants to be useful. I said, ‘You could be even more useful if you put an end to the war between Ukraine and Russia. That would be more useful,’” Trump emphasised.
Summing up the talks, Trump added that Putin demonstrates a willingness to act “very constructively.” Despite the complexity of the situation, the American leader considers the dialogue itself a positive step for global security.
It should be recalled that Trump previously made statements about the potential “absorption” of Cuba, suggesting that it be done voluntarily. He also spoke about a possible change of leadership in Iran.
