The October Palace in Kyiv sustained significant damage as a result of a Russian attack
On the night of May 24, the International Center for Culture and Arts (ICCA) of the Federation of Trade Unions of Ukraine sustained significant damage as a result of a massive Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv.
The building was damaged by a powerful blast wave.
According to Tetyana Mohyla, Art Director of the Atlas Festival, the facility sustained serious damage:
- the roof was damaged and subsequently caught fire
- part of the facade was destroyed and windows were shattered
- some interior rooms were damaged
Repair and cleanup work is currently underway at the site, including clearing the area of glass and structural debris. The roof has been temporarily covered with tarpaulin to protect the building from rain and further damage.
Despite the damage, organizers reported that the main concert hall did not suffer critical damage and is expected to resume operations as early as May 27.
Events scheduled for May 24–26 will be rescheduled to other dates, which will be announced later.
It is also noted that the facade and the building’s exterior perimeter require extensive restoration.
The ICCM team has appealed to international partners and the business community to join the effort to restore the facility.
“We will be sincerely grateful to international institutions, partners, businesses, and everyone willing to join the restoration of the ICCM,” said Tetiana Mohyla.
According to her, it is important to complete the priority work before the start of the heating season to preserve the building as a cultural landmark of the capital.
The situation holds particular symbolism in that just a few hours before the shelling, the ICCM hosted a concert by Georgian singer Nino Katamadze accompanied by the Ukrainian Armed Forces Orchestra.
The organizers noted that just the night before, the hall was filled with music and applause, but by morning, the venue was left with signs of destruction.
