The first footage from the site of the Russian airstrike on a school in Sumy has been released. Photos and videos show the damaged school building—with shattered windows and doors and damaged walls. The strike occurred on the afternoon of September 27. According to Suspilne, explosions were heard in the city around 3:35 p.m. Prior to this, the Air Force had reported guided bombs heading toward Sumy.

According to a school employee, about 40 students were in the shelter at the time of the strike. According to preliminary information, the children were not injured. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the strike on the school and reported that students and school staff were in the shelter during the attack. “Four KAB bombs struck the city center, hitting the school building directly while classes were in session. I thank the teachers and school administration: the children and teachers were in the shelter, and a total of 100 people were evacuated in time,” Zelenskyy wrote. Thus, not only students but also school staff were inside the school during the attack. According to the president, a total of about 100 people were evacuated from the building in time.
What is known about the consequences of the attack
Russian troops struck Sumy with four guided aerial bombs. Not only the school but also civilian buildings in the city sustained damage. Oleg Grigorov, head of the Sumy Regional State Administration, reported that two people were killed as a result of the attack. According to him, they were in their homes in the residential area.
