The Navy explained why Russia is no longer launching Kalibr missiles from the sea

The Russian Navy is not risking venturing into the open sea to launch "Kalibr" cruise missiles at Ukrainian territory for fear of retaliation by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

This was stated by Dmytro Pletenchuk, spokesperson for the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. According to him, attacks with these missiles are now infrequent—occurring about once a month—and the most recent strike was most likely carried out directly from the base.

Pletenchuk noted that the situation has changed dramatically compared to the start of the full-scale invasion, when Russian warships could be seen on the horizon near Odesa. Currently, Russian military personnel are afraid to leave their base in Novorossiysk, Krasnodar Krai, as the Ukrainian Defense Forces have effectively deprived Russia of its dominance in the western, southern, and central parts of the Black Sea. According to statistics from the Ukrainian Air Force, during the latest massive shelling, “Kalibr” missile launches were recorded from Novorossiysk, the Caspian Sea, and the Black Sea.

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russian “Kalibr” cruise missiles have undergone at least two significant upgrades

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has issued an in absentia notice of suspicion against the Russian military personnel who commanded the Kalibr attack on Zakarpattia in 2025.
