Zelenskyy says Russia may intensify attacks ahead of US elections — Anadolu Agency

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia, an aggressor state, may intensify attacks on Ukraine ahead of the US midterm elections scheduled for November 3. He said this in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Pais, Anadolu Agency reports.

Possible escalation

According to Zelenskyy, Russian President Vladimir Putin seeks to demonstrate that sanctions and pressure from European countries do not restrain him. He said that he had warned US negotiators about a possible intensification of Russian attacks around the elections, including against civilians.

Zelenskyy also said that the purpose of the strikes is to pressure Ukrainians, primarily residents of Kyiv, to make them leave the capital. At the same time, the president stressed that Kyiv remains resilient despite the attacks.

Drones and assistance to Moscow

The president said that Russia attacks Ukraine around the clock and launches hundreds of drones every day. In his view, Moscow's strategy is aimed at plunging Ukraine into chaos.

Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine is seeking additional funding and adapting its approach to the war, which has been ongoing since February 2022. He also accused China and India of helping Russia circumvent sanctions and supplying equipment. Separately, the president said that Iran is assisting Moscow with expertise and technologies related to the war, particularly in the field of drones.
