Residents of Kuchma’s hometown of Chaikino are refusing to comply with the mandatory evacuation order

Former Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma was born in the village of Chaikine in the Chernihiv region, where about 170 people currently live, Some residents are refusing to leave their homes despite the start of the mandatory evacuation from border settlements, which began on July 1.

This was stated by Andriy Podorvan, an advisor to the head of the Chernihiv Regional State Administration, during a televised marathon.

“This was a request specifically from the military. And, as far as I understand, one of the arguments is that there has been a sharp increase in the number of FPV drones that the enemy is using to strike civilian infrastructure. So, 12 settlements. In addition to these, we also have seven settlements from the previous mandatory evacuation where people remained,” he noted.

In total, according to the adviser, more than a thousand people live in these settlements, including 120 children.

Most of the settlements subject to mandatory evacuation are located in the Novhorod-Siverskyi community (Vorobiivka; Kamin; Kam’yanska Sloboda; Karabany; Chaikine). At the same time, the evacuation of residents in the villages of Kamin and Kam’yanska Sloboda has been gradually underway since 2023.

In addition, “Suspilne” notes that the village of Chaykine is currently home to about 170 people, including 28 internally displaced persons who had previously left other border settlements. As early as the beginning of June, the village head was collecting signatures from residents regarding a mandatory evacuation, but none of the residents agreed to leave the village.

“If you take Karabany and Chaykine together, that’s about 20 families. Are these families being offered housing? I don’t think so. Assistance? No, not that either. That’s why I believe: (before announcing a mandatory evacuation, – “Glavkom”), our authorities should have considered providing appropriate housing,” noted a resident of the village of Chaikine.

The journalist noted that the situation in Chaikine is currently relatively calm. In addition, he said, people are refusing to evacuate due to a lack of acceptable housing options—they are not satisfied with the modular housing complexes, and they have no other options. He also emphasized that the mandatory evacuation is not compulsory: the final decision to leave is made by the residents themselves.

It should be noted that former Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma was born in the village of Chaikine, Novhorod-Siverskyi District, Chernihiv Oblast.
