May 22 marks World Goth Day: the history of the darkest subculture

Every year on May 22, people around the world celebrate an informal holiday for members of the goth subculture—World Goth Day. It was launched in 2009 by British radio hosts at BBC Radio 6 Music to draw attention to goth culture and dispel stereotypes about it.

Goths emerged in the late 1970s in the UK as a musical genre that grew out of post-punk. The subculture was built on a dark aesthetic, melancholic music, and a love for a mystical atmosphere. Bauhaus, The Cure, and Siouxsie and the Banshees are considered among the main bands that influenced the development of the goth scene.

Despite common myths, Gothic culture is not associated with aggression or dangerous cults. For most of its followers, it is a way of self-expression through music, art, and a distinctive style.
