A 71-year-old American man was released after more than 40 years on death row

In Utah, a court granted bail to 71-year-old Douglas Stewart Carter, who had been on death row for more than four decades. The man was convicted of murder, but new DNA analysis did not confirm his involvement in the crime.

Carter was sentenced to death in 1985. At that time, a jury found him guilty of the murder of Eva Olesen, who was the aunt of the Provo police chief.

After a reexamination of the evidence, the prosecution reported that the DNA results did not confirm Carter’s involvement in the murder. In light of this, the court ruled to release him on bail pending a new trial.

While free, he will be on bail and required to wear a GPS ankle monitor.
