81% of Estonians are prepared to take up arms in the event of an attack — ERR
The vast majority of Estonians demonstrate a high level of patriotism and a determination to defend their country in the event of a military attack.
This is evidenced by the official results of a recent annual public opinion survey on national defense commissioned by the Estonian Ministry of Defense, according to ERR.
Citizens’ security concerns remain consistently high amid ongoing threats in Europe.
According to the published data, “81% of respondents are convinced that in the event of an attack, Estonia is obligated to mount an armed resistance.”
At the same time, “62% of those surveyed declared their readiness to personally take up arms or join the defense effort in accordance with their skills and capabilities.”
Analysts note that the level of personal readiness to defend the homeland has remained unchanged over the past two years.
At the same time, sociologists have noted a certain divergence in the views of representatives of the country’s various ethnic groups. Among ethnic Estonians, the willingness to fight back against the enemy with arms in hand stands at 69%.
Among representatives of other nationalities, particularly the large Russian-speaking minority, this figure is significantly lower, standing at 48%.
The study also revealed the level of citizens’ confidence in their own capabilities and collective security. In other words, society recognizes the importance of a first strike and its own resilience.
Estonian residents demonstrate a deep understanding of contemporary security challenges stemming from the war in Europe. Specifically, “82% of citizens support NATO membership, and 71% believe that the Alliance’s defense shield is capable of deterring a potential attack by the Russian Federation.”
These figures indicate a high level of trust in the West’s collective security system.
The issue of military funding and the development of defense infrastructure has also resonated with the public.
Only a minimal share of respondents, 17%, spoke in favor of cutting funding.
