Beijing has expressed dissatisfaction with Japan's decision to send military personnel to the NATO mission coordinating aid to Ukraine.
This was stated by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian during a briefing.
The Chinese side’s comment came after reports in the Japanese media about the government’s decision to send four officers from the Japan Self-Defense Forces to a military base in Germany to familiarize themselves with NATO-led programs supporting Ukraine.
According to Lin, China is concerned about Tokyo’s actions, which, in his view, indicate an expansion of the country’s military activity and the advancement of remilitarization processes.
“China is concerned about the actions of the Japanese side, which is actively promoting remilitarization and expanding the scope of its military activities. We call on the international community to remain highly vigilant regarding manifestations of new Japanese militarism,” stated the representative of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He also expressed the view that such steps could lead to the participation of Japanese military personnel in actual combat operations, which, according to Beijing, contradicts the pacifist principles that Japan has adhered to since World War II.
In addition, the spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that the creation of such infrastructure under NATO’s auspices allegedly negatively impacts regional stability and is inconsistent with the status of a peaceful state that Japan claims to be.
Japan has allocated $14.658 million to implement NATO’s PURL initiative, which involves the procurement of equipment for Ukraine’s needs.
