A court in Russia sentenced a young man to five years in prison for a quote on Telegram
The Central District Military Court of the Russian Federation sentenced Maxim Zakharov, a 20-year-old resident of Yekaterinburg, to five years in a penal colony for a comment he posted on the Telegram messaging app.
The Moscow Times reports on this.
The Russian man was found guilty of allegedly “publicly justifying terrorism.”
In addition to the prison sentence, the court banned the young man from administering any websites or personal blogs for two years.
The basis for the criminal prosecution was a comment in which Zakharov quoted a report about the “Russian Volunteer Corps” invading the Belgorod region.
The young man copied a post by the “Polish Volunteer Corps” about its participation in a joint raid with the RVC, which took place in May 2023. The comment contained no personal calls to action or assessments of his own.
