Afghanistan may send workers to Russia amid a labor shortage

Afghanistan is considering sending migrant workers to Russia, which is facing an acute labor shortage. Both sides have expressed mutual interest, despite the language barrier and organizational challenges, according to Russian media reports.

Russia, which has recently been grappling with an increasingly severe labor shortage, may receive a new influx of migrant workers from Afghanistan, where authorities are already working out the relevant cooperation mechanisms.

Afghanistan’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Nuruddin Azizi, stated that there is a “shared interest” on both sides in launching such a process, despite the challenges that still need to be resolved.

According to him, the main obstacle remains the language barrier, but a special intergovernmental commission is already working to make the process possible. “There is a shared interest on the part of both Russia and Afghanistan,” Aziz noted, commenting on negotiations regarding potential labor migration.

Against the backdrop of these statements, there is increasing talk in Russia of a labor crisis that is already affecting key sectors of the economy. Elvira Nabiullina, Chair of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, acknowledged that the country is facing an unprecedented labor shortage, the scale of which has never been seen before.

According to estimates by the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, the industrial sector alone is short about 2 million workers, and the situation is even more acute in certain regions. Similar figures were cited by the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade. “Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin complained of a shortage of 400,000–500,000 workers in the capital alone,” the report states, adding that by 2032, the Russian economy may need more than 12 million new workers.

Against this backdrop, Russian businesses are forced to search more actively for workers, lowering their requirements for candidates and accepting less-qualified employees in order to fill critical vacancies. Experts note that this situation has already become a systemic problem affecting not only specific industries but also the overall stability of the Russian economy.

As a reminder, the Taliban rejected Trump’s proposal to return U.S. troops to Afghanistan.

Trump also hinted that he is not opposed to sending U.S. troops back to Afghanistan.
