Actress Julie Andrews will not be returning to *The Princess Diaries 3*
Julie Andrews has no plans to reprise her role as Queen Clarissa in the third installment of *The Princess Diaries*. At the same time, Disney is ready to invite the actress to join the project if she changes her mind. This was revealed by Anne Hathaway, who will reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis.
According to Hathaway, the film’s creators have repeatedly tried to convince Andrews to join the third installment, but they respect her decision.
“First of all, I want to say: if she changes her mind, we’re all for it. But we also want to respect her decision. After all, if anyone has made a huge contribution to the world of entertainment and our shared joy, it’s her. Whatever she decides, we completely understand. We really tried very hard to find out if she’d be willing to come back,” Hathaway said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.
The actress also shared her vision for a sequel to *The Princess Diaries*. According to her, the third installment should be appealing not only to a new audience but also to those who grew up watching the first two films.
“I just want it to be fun. The women who were six years old when the first movie came out are now much older, and many of them have become mothers themselves—perhaps even to six-year-olds. I want them to feel like they’re bringing their kids to something that once meant a lot to them,” Hathaway explained.
Julie Andrews previously confirmed that she has no plans to reprise her role as Queen Clarissa. According to her, project representatives have repeatedly asked her over the past year if she’s ready to return to the role.
“I think I’ve probably moved past that stage… I think the best way to put it is that I’m effectively retired. All last year, I was asked if I’d like to return. It was very, very hard to say ‘no,’ but I did because I feel I had a wonderful journey with this project,” the actress said.
Andrews also noted that, in her opinion, the third film could work without her character.
“I think the new movie will do just fine even without a grandma my age,” she added.
