Syrian army seizes Euphrates Dam near Tabqa

Syria’s Ministry of Energy has announced that government forces have taken control of the Euphrates Dam near the town of Tabqa. The facility is strategically important, providing electricity generation and regulating water resources across large parts of the country.

The seizure followed earlier advances in the area, which had been held by the Syrian Democratic Forces. The move forms part of a broader government offensive aimed at regaining control over northern and eastern territories that were previously under Kurdish-led administration.

Developments around Tabqa highlight the shifting balance of power in Syria following the removal of Bashar al-Assad in late 2024. The new leadership in Damascus is seeking to reassert authority over critical infrastructure and consolidate central control over strategic assets.

For the United States, the situation underscores the need to recalibrate its Syria policy. Washington has spent years backing the Syrian Democratic Forces in the fight against ISIL, but is now balancing that legacy with new support for President Ahmed al-Sharaa, whose rebel coalition rose to power after the change of regime.
