US Army awards Palantir $48.1 million contract for ammunition management — Defense News

The US Army has awarded a Palantir Technologies subsidiary a $48.1 million contract to develop software for ammunition accounting and management. As Defense News reports, the new system is intended to consolidate nine separate legacy platforms.

Accounting throughout the life cycle

According to the US Army, the software will be developed using commercial low-code and no-code technologies. It is intended to allow the military to track ammunition at all stages: from planning, production and procurement to storage, control, distribution, use and final disposition.

The Army said the system is part of a broader modernization of ammunition management processes. It is also intended to help retire legacy systems and improve audit readiness.

Problems with old systems

The contract was awarded amid identified problems in current ammunition accounting processes. In March, the US Army's Line of Departure magazine wrote about inaccurate demand forecasting and disconnected digital systems. At lower levels, forecasts are often based on assumptions and historical trends rather than actual demand linked to training cycles.

Legacy platforms operate separately from one another, meaning that changes in training schedules may not be reflected in ammunition management processes in real time.

Contract timeline

Palantir was selected following a three-stage selection process that lasted six weeks. Suppliers were assessed on their ability to integrate data from various legacy systems, create planning and forecasting models, and support tactical users in conditions of limited connectivity or low network bandwidth.

The company will develop the new software over 12 months and then provide support for another five years. Palantir has previously participated in several US Army programs to integrate artificial intelligence into workflows and decision-making.
