Jammu and Kashmir Assembly backs restoration of statehood in India — Dawn

India's Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Monday backed a non-binding resolution calling for the region's full statehood to be restored. The document urges the government in New Delhi to immediately and urgently restore full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, Dawn reports.

Regional government's initiative

The resolution was introduced by Omar Abdullah, who heads the Jammu and Kashmir government. He said that statehood is the region's right.

Lawmakers from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party left the chamber before the vote. Many of them called the resolution unconstitutional and “anti-national.”

Previous decisions

The text also mentions resolutions demanding autonomy adopted in 2000 and 2024. Neither the current resolution nor the two previous documents are constitutionally binding.

The debate over the region's governance has continued since New Delhi revoked Jammu and Kashmir's limited autonomy in 2019.
