Pope Leo XIV urges taking AI risks seriously — Euronews
Pope Leo XIV, after a four-day trip to France, said during a flight from Metz to Rome that specialists’ warnings about the risks of artificial intelligence should not be dismissed as fake news. He called for discussing AI safety issues and taking appropriate measures, Euronews reports.
Call to discuss the risks
The pontiff stressed that it is not possible to simply pretend that nothing will happen. According to him, political leaders, AI industry executives, civil society organizations and associations should jointly assess the changes that are already taking place, as well as the possible consequences of further technological development.
Leo XIV said that he is not in a state of panic, but believes that the concerns of many experts and artificial intelligence specialists should be taken seriously. He called it irresponsible to ignore potential risks by claiming that they will supposedly not materialize.
Trump’s position and statements by industry representatives
The Pope’s statement came against the backdrop of the position of US President Donald Trump. According to the outlet, Trump has repeatedly called warnings about the rapid development of AI and its potential lack of control a hoax allegedly spread by his political opponents. At the same time, he stressed that the United States must maintain an advantage over China in artificial intelligence.

Several major companies in the industry, including Anthropic, have called for slowing technological development so that safety measures can keep pace with its progress. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned that within six to twelve months, AI could acquire the ability to manage a group of agents that could potentially take control of the entire internet.
The White House said that Trump had dinner with Amodei on Sunday and discussed with him Americans’ concerns about the technology and preserving US leadership. Leo XIV also dedicated his first encyclical, “Magnificent Humanity,” to protecting humanity amid AI development, calling for stronger regulation and a slowdown in technological development.
The pontiff drew attention to reports that Nvidia had introduced AI safeguards and noted that the company had previously resisted external regulation of this field.
