NASA astronauts will conduct a spacewalk from the ISS on Tuesday to perform repair work

Today, June 30, American astronauts Christopher Williams and Jessica Meir will conduct a spacewalk from the International Space Station

The main goal of the mission is to perform repairs on the Canadian remote manipulator Canadarm2, which is currently not functioning properly.

Problems with the equipment were detected on May 27 during routine operations.

NASA specialists discovered that the mechanism was drawing excessive motor current and had lost the ability to move correctly, necessitating an immediate suspension of its operation.

The astronauts’ task is to remove the malfunctioning wrist joint of the manipulator and replace it with a new spare unit.

Canadarm2 is a critically important part of the ISS infrastructure, as it facilitates the movement of external equipment and astronauts and plays a key role in spacecraft docking procedures.

The spacewalk will begin from the Quest airlock module at 15:35 Kyiv time. The planned duration of the spacewalk is approximately six and a half hours.

This mission will mark a milestone—the 280th operation conducted as part of the assembly, maintenance, and modernization of the International Space Station.

The repair will fully restore the functionality of a critical piece of equipment on the orbital laboratory.
