The aircraft carrier USS George Washington arrived in the Arabian Sea

The U.S. aircraft carrier USS George Washington arrived in the Arabian Sea as part of a scheduled deployment, according to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). According to Al Jazeera English, the ship arrived in the region on Wednesday, and CENTCOM announced the deployment on Thursday.

The USS George Washington was previously stationed in the western Pacific. Its redeployment means that the U.S. currently has no aircraft carrier in the region, despite Washington’s strategic focus on it.

According to Al Jazeera English’s report, the USS George Washington is expected to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln, whose rotation back to the U.S. was announced by the Navy last week. The USS Abraham Lincoln departed from the port of San Diego in November of last year, initially operating off the coast of Venezuela, and after the U.S. and Israel went to war with Iran on February 28, it was redirected to the region.

The USS Abraham Lincoln set a U.S. Navy record for the longest deployment without calling at a port. Last week, the situation surrounding the aircraft carrier drew renewed attention following reports of limited supplies of food and hygiene products, as well as maintenance issues due to its prolonged stay at sea.

Relatives of several of the approximately 5,000 sailors and Marines on board spoke to American media about the mission’s impact on the service members’ mental health. In particular, they reported instances where people attempted to jump overboard. Several Democratic lawmakers stated that the situation was evidence of inadequate war planning by the Donald Trump administration.

Trump and senior Pentagon officials dismissed reports about conditions on the USS Abraham Lincoln as misleading, stating that the crew is enduring the hardships of war. Amid a lull in hostilities, Iran continues to assert its intention to maintain influence in the Strait of Hormuz, while the U.S. reports progress in increasing ship traffic along this trade route.
