The Bank of Estonia will issue a 2-euro coin in honor of the island of Hiiumaa
In 2027, the Bank of Estonia will issue a special 2-euro coin dedicated to the island of Hiiumaa. It will feature the island’s most famous landmark—the Kipu Lighthouse—according to ERR News.
The central motif of the design will be the lighthouse surrounded by ocean waves. The rays of light will recreate the striped pattern of a traditional Hiiumaa skirt. The Bank of Estonia noted that this pattern is an important part of the island’s identity: it symbolizes continuity, resilience, and the safety of the island.

The coin was designed by Kaupo Kangro. His concept, “Dageida,” won the design competition. The original Kipu Lighthouse was completed in 1531; according to ERR News, it is the third-oldest operating lighthouse in the world.
One million coins will be minted and put into circulation through retail channels. They will be legal tender throughout the eurozone. The coin dedicated to Hiiumaa will launch a new series by the Bank of Estonia featuring the country’s counties, designed to highlight the diversity and cultural identity of its regions.
