Barcelona Set a New Temperature Record Due to an Unusually Hot Spell
Barcelona recorded its highest temperature ever since weather records began. Amid a new heat wave, temperatures rose to 40.5°C for the first time.
The record temperature was recorded by an automatic station at the Fabra Observatory. Observatory Director Javier Martín Viede confirmed that the new record is 40.5°C. The previous record of 40.0°C was set on July 30, 2024.
The heat wave also broke several other climate records in Catalonia. In particular, on the night of July 8, the Portbou-Coll dels Belitres weather station recorded a minimum temperature of 31.9°C. Meteorologists refer to such nights, when the temperature does not drop below 30°C, as “hellish.”
Due to the extreme heat, Barcelona city authorities activated the high-temperature emergency response plan. It provides for additional protective measures for the most vulnerable segments of the population, including the elderly, children, people with chronic illnesses, and the homeless.
Meanwhile, the Catalan government reported that 229 municipalities in the region are in an area of extremely high risk for wildfires.
According to weather forecasts, the abnormal heat in Catalonia will last at least until Sunday, although Spain’s national meteorological agency expects the current heat wave to end as early as Thursday.
Euronews reported this on July 8.
