A shooting occurred near the White House; the attacker was shot and killed by Secret Service agents

A shooting occurred near the White House complex in Washington, D.C., during which U.S. Secret Service agents shot and killed an armed man. The incident took place on the evening of May 23.

An unidentified individual approached a checkpoint near the White House and opened fire on law enforcement officers.

In response, Secret Service agents returned fire and wounded the attacker, who later died in the hospital.

According to preliminary reports, the suspect had a history of mental health issues and was previously subject to a restraining order prohibiting him from approaching certain locations.
