Bill Gates says governments are unprepared for AI-driven changes
In Stockholm, Sweden, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates spoke at the Goalkeepers event of the Gates Foundation. In an interview with Reuters, he said that no government in the world is prepared for the societal changes that artificial intelligence could cause, the Jerusalem Post reports.
Gates called on governments of different countries to cooperate in order to prevent potential problems related to AI. According to him, states are significantly behind in understanding this technology and its consequences.
Risks and contacts with leaders
Gates said that he had previously been more optimistic about AI but changed his position. Among the risks, he cited threats to jobs, concerns about attacks, and possible dependence on AI companions.
He also said that he had discussed his concerns with world leaders, including US President Donald Trump and his team. In addition, Gates plans to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year.

He compared the emergence of AI to the plot of disaster films, in which countries unite in the face of a common threat. In his view, the United States, China, and other countries must act together to cope with potential problems.
Funding access to AI
At the same time, Gates stressed that with proper governance and equal access, the technology could help narrow the gap between the richest and the poorest. The Gates Foundation plans to spend at least $1 billion over the next two years to expand access to AI.
These funds are part of the foundation's previously announced plans to spend $9 billion annually. Partners in education, healthcare, and agriculture will receive funding.
The foundation also wants to develop the information base for AI, including helping ensure that large language models can operate in all languages spoken by people. Gates separately noted AI's potential in medicine, from supporting healthcare workers to finding new medicines and vaccines.
