Belarus released five prisoners following Trump's appeal
Following the release of five citizens of Poland and Moldova who had been imprisoned in Russia and Belarus, U.S. President Donald Trump publicly thanked Alexander Lukashenko. The American leader also commented on the release itself and called for further steps in this direction.
He wrote about this on the evening of May 10 on the social media platform Truth Social.
According to Trump, the release involved three Polish and two Moldovan prisoners. The U.S. president stated that the release was made possible thanks to the work of his special presidential envoy, John Cole.
“Thanks to my special presidential envoy John Cole, we were able to make significant efforts to ensure this release took place,” Trump noted.
He also recalled that Polish President Karol Nawrocki had asked him during a meeting last September to help secure the release of Andrzej Poczobut, who was being held in a Belarusian prison.
“Today, Pochobut is free thanks to our efforts. The United States helps its allies and friends. Thank you to President Lukashenko for his cooperation and friendship. It’s so nice,” Trump wrote.
In the post, the American president specifically thanked Alexander Lukashenko, which drew attention amid ongoing U.S. and European sanctions against the Belarusian regime.
