Most Estonians oppose the placement of prisoners from Sweden in Estonia — ERR

Most Estonian citizens do not support the agreement signed between Estonia and Sweden, which provides for the placement of up to 600 prisoners from the neighboring country in Tartu Prison.

Public dissatisfaction with this initiative reflects Estonians’ serious concerns about internal security and the use of local infrastructure for the needs of other countries.

According to the published survey data, 54% of respondents clearly stated that they do not support or rather do not support the current intergovernmental agreement.

In contrast, only 35% of those surveyed view such cooperation favorably, seeing it as a financial benefit for the country.

Another 11% of survey participants were unable to decide on their position and answer the question.

Estonian citizens also expressed clear expectations regarding the future government’s next steps on this issue. Nearly half of the respondents, 48%, believe that the next government should terminate the agreement with Sweden.

Thirty-eight percent of respondents opposed terminating this international agreement, while 14% were unable to clearly define their position during the survey.

ERR reports on this.
