Blockade of the Strait of Hormuz Threatens Global Famine – UN

A blockade of the Strait of Hormuz threatens to cause a global humanitarian disaster and starvation for 45 million people due to a halt in fertilizer supplies. The international community has only a few weeks to reopen the route in order to save future harvests in African and Asian countries.

This was reported by France24.

Da Silva, Executive Director of the UN Office for Project Services, emphasized that the conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran has blocked the passage of ships carrying critically important raw materials: ammonia, urea, and sulfur. The halt in exports coincided with the planting season, which has already triggered a sharp rise in fertilizer prices and threatens global food inflation. To stabilize the situation, it is necessary to ensure the passage of just five ships per day; however, the implementation of the plan is being blocked by a lack of political will on the part of the parties involved and the absence of security guarantees.

UN Secretary-General Guterres initiated the creation of a working group back in March to organize a safe corridor in the conflict zone. Despite the current stability of food prices, the shortage of soil nutrients due to logistical paralysis will have long-term consequences for the entire world. Currently, Russia and the Gulf states remain engaged in diplomatic consultations, but the decisive factor remains the lifting of the blockade on the key maritime artery.

U.S. President Donald Trump is growing increasingly frustrated with the progress of negotiations with Iran to end the conflict and is considering the possibility of resuming large-scale military operations against Tehran.

Trump denies that the war with Iran is over and announces new objectives.

Britain has called on Iran to fully open the Strait of Hormuz and restore international shipping, which has been operating intermittently since the situation escalated.

Recall that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu does not consider the war with Iran to be over.

Official Tehran has refused to participate in the second round of peace talks with the United States, which were to take place in Islamabad.

Iran rejected Trump’s claims about transferring uranium to the U.S. and accused him of manipulation.
