Britain Is Approaching a Record Death Toll Due to the Heat — Sky News
The United Kingdom has recorded nearly 2,900 heat-related deaths since the beginning of 2026. This figure is already nearly double the number of such deaths for all of 2025.
This is according to preliminary estimates from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). According to the agency, during two heat waves in May and June of this year, 2,877 deaths were recorded that may be linked to high temperatures.
Specifically, 753 deaths occurred during the heatwave from May 24 to 27, and another 2,124 deaths occurred during the heatwave that lasted from June 21 to 28.
By comparison, in 2024, the UK recorded 1,311 heat-related deaths, and in 2025, 1,504.
The UKHSA emphasized that these figures are preliminary but already indicate that the country is approaching the highest annual heat-related death toll on record, which was recorded in 2022. At that time, the number of such deaths set a national record.
